Last night, I finally finished my taxes after 2 months of putting it off, along with another 2 weeks of finding something better to do. Yes, if you couldn't tell, this is one of those times that I owe the government instead of getting a refund back. One of the drawbacks of both working a regular job AND making websites on the side. It doesn't outweigh the benefits of the exra money to go buy toys with, so I'm not going to bitch too much. I definitely got my money's worth out of TurboTax this year. I got the home business edition, filled in all the blanks, and let it print out the 28 pages needed for my federal and sate returns. One of these days I'll get an accountant.
I also managed to get the last of the chiropractor's website moved to the new server over the weekend. Now I've just got to get back to those other 3 sites I'm working on...
My favorite news story of the day. The first paragraph:
"NEW YORK - While reporting on a U.S. Navy medical team in Iraq on Thursday, CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta unexpectedly became part of the story when asked to perform emergency brain surgery. The 2-year-old Iraqi boy did not survive."
There's more to the story, but just reading that first paragraph makes me laugh.
Last night I went and saw a movie (something I haven't done in a long time). I went and saw Dreamcatcher. Billed as a "Stephen King Suspense Thriller", it was more of a straight sci-fi movie. In fact, it reminded me of something I would see on the Sci-Fi channel as one of their first run movies. It wasn't a bad movie, in fact I enjoyed it, but it wasn't the movie that I thought I was going to see (no supernatural blood and guts flying around).
My highpoint was in the previews before the movie. They showed Final Flight of the Osiris, first in the Animatrix series that will hype the upcoming Matrix Reloaded movie. I'm looking forward to the new Matrix. I still remember going to see the original in Louisville, leaving the theater and saying "Wow, I've gotta see that again" (this was before Matrix mania hit and everybody found out what they had been missing). So now I start to get hyped for the movie... only to have to wait until May 15th. Wait! That's not much more than a month away! Woo hoo!
I was paranoid about yesterday being April Fools Day. Not so much about pranks being pulled, but with something going wrong and it being misconstrued as a prank. Well, the day was prank free, but in the course of the day I managed to talk to everyone I'm maintaining or developing a website for, and in the process I've got a tweak or two to make. For each one.
Remember how, last week, I was looking forward to some free. Goofing off. Playing.
I've got to put it off some more.
It's been 9 months since I had a real job. Everything since then has been web contracting, not exactly the most stable way to make a living. Today I join Jer at Spiritus, once again following him around and mimicing his choices. It's worked so well so far, I'm not tempted to change yet.
I figure most of the day will be the traditional "getting settled" part of the job - paperwork, finding the bathroom, etc. Bob's given me 9 months to a year before I discover that I don't like it. I didn't tell him, but every job I've had, I start to get restless after a year and start looking. Maybe this time will be different.
As always, correct spelling is optional in any blog entry. Keep in mind that any links more than a year old may not be active, especially the ones pointing back to Russellmania (I like to move things around!).
Tags have been added to posts back to 2005. There may be an occasional old blog that gets added to the tag list, but in reality what could be noteworthy from that far back?
