Ok, so today is my birthday. I'm old enough to not make a big deal of it (plus, I don't get the cool presents anymore unless I go buy them myself). It's still a bit of a deal for mom, so I'm skipping work and running off to Tennessee to spend the day with her. She's been sounding excited about my visit, so I think it's going to be a good trip.
Today is also celebrates my birthday buddy Laura Kimes. Laura's been through a lot the past year, and I think about her and her boys a couple of times a week at least. I need to send her some mail and check up on her, but I'm horrible at sending mail to catch up with people (Anne, Tracy, and Jeff can confirm that right now). Still, I'm going to force myself this time. It's the least you can do for someone with whom you share a birthday.
Today is the last day I get to call Jerry an Old Timer. Tomorrow I become the same age as he. Even better, I'm sneaking out of town to go see my Mommy so he can't rub in that now I'll be as old as he is.
I've always been a Star Trek nerd. Usually, a closet nerd, but I've been one nonetheless. I've been gradually getting the DVD versions of all the available Star Trek series, and I've managed to get to the point where I lack only 1 season of 1 of the series being complete. It seems the season 4 of Voyager is now my holy grail.
It's easy enough to find, but my key in getting all of these episodes has been to try to pay as little as possible. eBay, Amazon, they all have what I need, but if I were to pay $100, $90, or $80 for each season of the various Star Trek series, that would add up to a tidy sum (4 series, 24 seasons total). May goal has been to stay in the $60-$70 range, and most of the time I've been successful. Patience and timing hass been the key. But once you get to the final step (or season), it's hard not to jump and go ahead and get what's available just to make the collection complete.
Plus, with my birthday coming up I've got an excuse to go ahead and buy it. Like I need an excuse....
Today is the last day of Black History Month, the shortest month of the year. As the month concludes, I start to wonder why no one has claimed the other months. We have no Spanish History Month, Italian History Month, or Polish History Month. With America being the melting pot it is (I'm sure there was a Schoolhouse Rock about that), why is black history the only one observed for a whole freakin' month?
I traditionally proclaim that March 1st is the beginning with "Up With Whitey" month as a counter to Black History Month. Of course, I never investigate or share the trails, tribulations, exploits, and adventures of white America. Anyone who knows me will jump on the bandwagon and tell you "he really doesn't care", and I don't. If March were to become Wrestling Game Month, I'd be all up in that! Or Hooters Month, that'd be a good one too. Not the resteraunt though, that'd be a waste. Actual hooters, those are worth celebrating.
So, I look forward to "Up With Whitey Wrestling Hooter Game" Month, as I hope you all do.
Even with my body rebelling against me, I still made it through karate this week. I skipped most of the kicking under the advice of my chiropractor, since she explained that the jerking motion in the hip while kicking can irritate the muscles causing my
pain discomfort. If I knew how to kick with better control I would be alright. as it is, I flail way to much.
Yesterday we did my favorite part of karate, the katas, or in my case, the kata. I only know 1 for now. I know of at least 8 others, but only have a reasonable chance of picking 1 of them up any time soon. I like it because it's a distinct set of moves in order. I suppose this means I would also like tai chi.
We also practiced a couple of throws. Jerry had the most fun, finding that his frail, dainty 180lb body could fling my massive, hulking 385lb body down with ease were I to attack him from behind via bearhug, as long as I was in the mindset to not actually hurt him while doing so. This was almost as much fun when the we reversed positions, and Jerry's long, slender arms found they could not encompass the truly macho chest that I've come to develop over the years. When I looked down and saw his hands, 4 or 5 incehes away from each other, trying to gain a grip to restrain me, I started to laugh so hard I almost peed on myself.
We've got to start taping this class. Or maybe it's best that we don't.
As always, correct spelling is optional in any blog entry. Keep in mind that any links more than a year old may not be active, especially the ones pointing back to Russellmania (I like to move things around!).
Tags have been added to posts back to 2005. There may be an occasional old blog that gets added to the tag list, but in reality what could be noteworthy from that far back?
