Just Some Birthday Stuff

03.09.2005

I spent the majority of this past weekend running around seeing people. Last Friday I went to Tennessee and saw Mom, and managed to have a really good visit. Usually when I go I get kind of anxious to come home after a couple of hours, but this was one of those times I wanted to stay longer (and I didn't make it home until 1:30 in the morning). The next day I went off to Moulton to see Dad. Much like the day before, I ended up having a good visit and had to leave before I really wanted to. Sunday I went to Gina'a and again had a good visit, along with a good trip to Backyard Burgers.

Today marks the birthday of Old Man Poplin, who is probably reaching his mid-hundreds today. Old Man Poplin is best known for his views on the topics of the day which he shares with the Huntsville Times editor, often times leading to said opinions being shared via newspaper with the community at large. So happy birthday, Old Man Poplin! I hope you have as much fun with people on your birthday as I did mine!

(Old Man Poplin is really a sweetie, so I only pick on him out of the love that I have for my secret surrogate father - which also means I need to ask for a raise in my allowance)

Slightly Postal

03.08.2005

I received a parcel in my mail and I'm trying to figure out how I got it. The mail was addressed to a kid that used my address for his drivers license about 3 years ago (long, slightly law-breaking story I'll save for another time). This particular piece of mail had the right street, but the city and state were:

  • Athens, Tn 35616

One, I'm in Alabama, not Tennessee, although there is an Athens, Tn about 200 miles away. This pointed me to the zipcode, and it seems that 35616 belongs to Cherokee, Al, a good hour away from my Athens.

So how did the mail reach me, where it was supposed to go? Granted, it had the right street address, but with the wrong state and zip code? Has the post office started hiring psychics to deliver the mail? I'm intrigued. I'm confused. I'm even slightly paranoid.

    Old Age Is A Knockin

    03.04.2005

Ok, so today is my birthday. I'm old enough to not make a big deal of it (plus, I don't get the cool presents anymore unless I go buy them myself). It's still a bit of a deal for mom, so I'm skipping work and running off to Tennessee to spend the day with her. She's been sounding excited about my visit, so I think it's going to be a good trip.

Today is also celebrates my birthday buddy Laura Kimes. Laura's been through a lot the past year, and I think about her and her boys a couple of times a week at least. I need to send her some mail and check up on her, but I'm horrible at sending mail to catch up with people (Anne, Tracy, and Jeff can confirm that right now). Still, I'm going to force myself this time. It's the least you can do for someone with whom you share a birthday.

    Old Timer - 1

    03.03.2005

Today is the last day I get to call Jerry an Old Timer. Tomorrow I become the same age as he. Even better, I'm sneaking out of town to go see my Mommy so he can't rub in that now I'll be as old as he is.

    Boldy Going

    03.02.2005

I've always been a Star Trek nerd. Usually, a closet nerd, but I've been one nonetheless. I've been gradually getting the DVD versions of all the available Star Trek series, and I've managed to get to the point where I lack only 1 season of 1 of the series being complete. It seems the season 4 of Voyager is now my holy grail.

It's easy enough to find, but my key in getting all of these episodes has been to try to pay as little as possible. eBay, Amazon, they all have what I need, but if I were to pay $100, $90, or $80 for each season of the various Star Trek series, that would add up to a tidy sum (4 series, 24 seasons total). May goal has been to stay in the $60-$70 range, and most of the time I've been successful. Patience and timing hass been the key. But once you get to the final step (or season), it's hard not to jump and go ahead and get what's available just to make the collection complete.

Plus, with my birthday coming up I've got an excuse to go ahead and buy it. Like I need an excuse....

As always, correct spelling is optional in any blog entry. Keep in mind that any links more than a year old may not be active, especially the ones pointing back to Russellmania (I like to move things around!).

Tags have been added to posts back to 2005. There may be an occasional old blog that gets added to the tag list, but in reality what could be noteworthy from that far back?
